Luke Russert, the son of the legendary broadcaster Tim Russert, followed in his father's footsteps to carve out his own niche in journalism. After an impressive eight-year stint with NBC News, Luke decided to take a bold step in 2016 by leaving the network. Let’s dive into what led him to this decision and where his journey has taken him since then.
Remembering Tim Russert and Luke's Path to NBC
It’s hard to imagine Luke stepping into the world of journalism without thinking about his father, Tim Russert. Tim tragically passed away in 2008 at just 58 years old, while working on a voiceover for Meet the Press. His sudden death left a profound impact on Luke and the world of broadcasting. At the time, Tim was married to his wife, journalist Maureen Orth, who stood by him through it all.
Just one month after his father’s passing, Luke was named a correspondent for NBC News. Can you imagine stepping into the spotlight at such a vulnerable time in your life? Luke took the challenge head-on, saying, “I had 22 years of advice from my father, and I still get advice from my mother every day. If you ask if I’m ready to do it, I’ve been answering their questions for that amount of time. I can definitely take from what they asked me.”

Why Did Luke Russert Leave NBC?
Fast forward to July 2016, and Luke made the surprising announcement that he was leaving NBC. His departure wasn’t just about career moves—it was personal. “It’s fair to say my broadcast career began in an unusual way after college graduation and the death of my father,” Luke explained. “As a result, I threw myself into the work and never took the time to reflect, to travel, and to experience many things that would have given me a clearer sense of what my future should be.”
It’s easy to see how the whirlwind of emotions and responsibilities following his father’s death might have overshadowed Luke’s personal journey. By stepping away, he was giving himself the space to breathe, grow, and figure out what truly mattered to him.
What’s Luke Russert Up To Now?
Since leaving NBC, Luke has embraced a life of exploration and self-discovery. In May 2023, he published his first book, Look for Me There: Grieving My Father, Finding Myself. This deeply personal memoir delves into the complexities of grieving his father’s death and the journey of starting a new chapter in his life.

Luke appeared on Today to promote his memoir, touching the hearts of longtime NBC viewers when he spoke about his travels with his mom. “I did some traveling with her, and I began to understand her,” Luke shared during the broadcast. “I began to realize, ‘Wow, this was somebody who was not given anything, had to work so hard for every single thing she had.’ I get why you were pushing me so much.”
