If you're an HGTV fan, you might have noticed that 'Good Bones' isn't part of the network's Tuesday night lineup anymore. The news that Mina Starsiak Hawk and her team won't be returning for season 9 came as a shock to loyal fans of the show. But don't worry, there's more to the story than just the show's cancellation.
Why Did 'Good Bones' Come to an End?
Back in August 2023, Mina dropped the news during her 'Mina AF' podcast that 'Good Bones' would be wrapping up after season 8. At the time, she gave a pretty casual explanation, saying she just wanted to "switch it up." But as time went on, we learned there was more going on behind the scenes.
It turns out that tensions were running high on set, and things weren't always smooth between the cast members. Mina and her mom, Karen E. Laine, reportedly had a pretty intense disagreement behind the scenes. The two haven't been on the best terms over the past year, after going through a challenging time in their relationship. On top of that, Mina and her brother, Tad Starsiak, also experienced some friction during the filming of season 8. It seems like the whole team was ready for a change.

Even designer MJ Coyle admitted he wasn't surprised when the show came to an end. During an episode of 'Mina AF' in October 2023, MJ opened up about the challenges the team faced. "It got to the point where our small team wasn't even enjoying each other's company," he said. "We got through so much, including the pandemic, all those seasons, and everyone was just burnt out. People were sore, miserable, and it was time for a change."
Are There Any 'Good Bones' Spinoffs on the Horizon?
While 'Good Bones' may have come to an end, Mina isn't stepping away from the world of home renovation just yet. She's currently working on a spinoff that features special appearances from MJ. The project focuses on the renovation of her new lake house, which she recently purchased with her husband, Steve Hawk.
"Right now, we're filming the first phase of a two-episode spinoff, and it's been so much fun so far," Mina shared. "Steve's involved a lot, the kids are there often, and MJ and Austin Aynes are helping with the demo. It feels like going back to the early days when everything was joyful and fun. This new project is a fresh start, and I'm really excited about it."

Karen hasn't announced any plans for her own spinoff, but she's open to returning to HGTV with a new show in the future. "After eight incredible years of 'Good Bones,' I've developed such a deep appreciation for our production company," Karen told Indianapolis Business Journal in September 2023. "They're incredibly talented, and I've learned so much from them. I don't want to stop working with them. HGTV has been amazing to us, and if I could keep creating content for them for the rest of my life, that would be a dream come true."
